How To Incorporate Feng Shui Into an Existing Residence Hall

Even when your budget is limited and you have no plan to renovate, you can still improve life for students who live in existing campus housing. Modern feng shui offers ways to improve existing buildings to encourage productive study, sound sleep and comfortable living.

There are two useful approaches to making these changes: making them when the students are absent (during vacation or summer recess) and making them with the involvement of the students.

Changes When the Students Are Absent

A floor plan analysis reveals how design elements affect student behavior. For example, a particular door juxtaposition may contribute to arguing among roommates and can be easily corrected by a feng shui consultant with or without the students. A narrow entryway into a room may cause headaches or a feeling of compression and can be improved with mirrors. (Correct placement is important, so a feng shui consultant can help here.)

Analysis of the plot and the placement of the building on the land can help to determine ways to improve life for the students. For example, narrow road access to the building may cause fatigue in students. Improvements to landscaping or lighting can change the feeling in the building so the students have more energy.

Or let’s say that a feng shui consultant uncovers a narrow entry to every room that can be corrected by placing two mirrors in a precise location. That is best done in the summer or other time when the rooms are unoccupied – as are other changes that prepare a space for new occupants.

Changes with the Involvement of the Students

A RoomChi™ presentation gets students thinking about their space in new ways, and they begin working with their rooms. Interviews with students reveal how they are affected by their environment and their suggestions for improvement. Some of the best ideas come from students who are constantly challenged by the living spaces.

Certain students may even want a feng shui floor in a residence hall, intended for students who want to learn about feng shui and apply it to their spaces. A feng shui educator/consultant could work with students living together who are committed to creating great energy on their floor.

Review of the Process Undertaken by a Feng Shui Consultant

  1. RoomChi™ presentation
  2. Visits to residence halls
  3. Floor plan analysis
  4. Plot plan analysis
  5. Interviews with students/housing officials
  6. Review research on student behavior
  7. Recommend feng shui improvements

Implementations of improvements are made, in some cases, by the feng shui consultant when the room in unoccupied, and in other cases, by the students and the housing department under the guidance of the fengs shui consultant.

All consultations are confidential.
